What to Wear for Golf: The Complete Guide

Your golf clothing can have a serious impact on how you play. Proper performancewear is built with advanced features that help you swing more naturally, that let you focus better, and which allow you to play for 18-holes in comfort.

So, what do you need to think about when building out your golf outfit? Here are the essentials for choosing men’s and women’s golf clothing.

Golf clothing: What you need to know

Whether you’re heading to the links for your first ever session, or are looking to progress to the next level, there are a few essentials to think about when choosing golf apparel.

Club rules and etiquette

Most golf clubs follow standard rules about what you can and cannot wear. If you’re going to a new club and are unsure, check their website or call them up.

If you wear specially-designed golf clothing from Under Armour, you’ll be fine on almost all courses.

What to expect from golf gear

“I love being part of the Under Armour family because I know every time I step on the course, I'm competing in the best gear in the world. Like myself, they are always pushing the envelope and give me what I need to perform my best” Jordan Spieth

It’s worth investing in performancewear that’s designed for the specific needs of your sport. Proper golf clothing includes multiple features that help you play better:

  • Sweat wicking: Golf gear is built using fabrics which wick sweat - they transport moisture from your skin to the outside of the fabric where it can evaporate. That keeps you dry and avoids chafing.

  • Breathable: A full 18 holes in warm weather is hard work. Golf performancewear is breathable, letting air circulate. Under Armour golf clothing includes advanced tech and fabric prints like UA Iso-Chill which pulls heat away from your skin.

  • Flex: Whether you’re driving or squatting down on the putting green, your gear needs to move with your body - and not restrict it.

  • UV protection: You’ll be spending time in the sun, so your gear needs to protect you from harmful UV rays. Quality golf clothing should be at least UPF 40, which reduces the risk of sun damage through your clothes.

  • Friction-ready: There are a few hotspots where friction can occur when playing golf. Proper gear moves seams away from these areas to reduce rubbing. Your gear should also be tough and hard wearing.

Seasons and the weather

Golf is an all-weather sport. So you need to choose performancewear that's ready for whatever the seasons throw at you.

  • Sun: Don’t underestimate the risk of UV damage - even on cloudy days. In addition to sun cream on exposed skin, wear clothes with in-built sun protection, and a hat to cover your head and ears

  • Rain: Water resistance is key for outerwear and trousers. Tech like UA Storm is water resistant but breathable. So you avoid getting clammy.

  • Cold: It’s all about layering. Aim for at least three - or more - layers that you can easily add or remove to control your body temperature.  For your baselayer, choose a short sleeve or polo. The mid layer can be a SweaterFleece or crew, while the outer layer could be a vest in dry weather, or a jacket if it’s wet out.

Planning your golf outfit

There are many types of men’s and women’s golf clothing.

Men’s golf clothing

Here are the most important kinds of golf clothes for men.

Men’s golf polos and short sleeves

If you’re playing at a club, you’ll almost certainly need a top with a collar - polo shirts are the way to go. Try the UA Playoff 3.0 Printed Polo. It’s super breathable, wicks sweat fast, and keeps you protected from the sun. At driving ranges or public courses, t-shirts and short sleeves are usually fine.

Men’s golf sweaters and midlayers

Essential for keeping you warm. Choose gear like our UA Drive Midlayer Crew - it’s lightweight yet warm, and thin enough to layer beneath outerwear. Half zips are also helpful for controlling temperature, and windproof and water resistant materials keep you comfortable in any condition. Try the UA Storm Midlayer ½ Zip.

Men’s golf jackets and coats

Water resistance, warmth and breathability are key here. The materials need to be flexible, tough and not too bulky - that lets you swing with ease. Try the UA Storm Revo Jacket.

Men’s golf trousers and pants

Choose breathable, flexible gear with water-resistant tech like UA Storm. Lightweight UA Drive 5 Pocket Pants or UA Drive Tapered Pants give you superior comfort, stretch and breathability. Training in the cold? Our ColdGear® Infrared Tapered Pants offer extra insulation without adding bulk.

Men’s golf shorts

Shorts are essential golf clothing for men in hot weather. Our lightweight UA Drive Tapered Shorts are super breathable and water resistant, keeping you fresh till the 18th hole.

Men’s golf accessories

Our golf accessories are designed to help you play better. The breathable, flexible UA Driver Silicone Belt moves with you through your swing. The UA Jordan Spieth Tour Adjustable Hat does more than just keep the sun out of your eyes. We used ArmourVent™ Technology and Iso-Chill so you stay cool and focused.

Women’s golf clothing

We build women’s golf clothes to help you play better. Here’s what you need.

Women's golf polos

A polo is pretty much essential. Our UA Playoff 3.0 Printed Polo wicks sweat insanely fast, it’s seriously lightweight and breathable, and offers UPF 50+ sun protection, and the four-button placket allows for maximum temperature control. The UA Playoff 3.0 Polo gives you the same features, but comes with a buttonless V-neck placket for simplicity.

Women's golf sweaters and midlayers

Control your body temperature and stay focused. Our super soft and stretchy UA Drive Midlayer Crew keeps you warm, without adding bulk. Meanwhile, the UA Storm Midlayer Full-Zip lets you manage heat and is water resistant - ideal for changeable conditions.

Women's golf jackets and coats

A warm, water-resistant jacket is vital when building your women’s golf outfit. The UA Rival Sport Jacket gives you the protection you need from the elements and keeps you warm, but without adding bulk.

Women's golf trousers and pants

Women’s golf trousers have to do a few key things. They’ve got to be lightweight, flexible, and move with you throughout your swing. Our UA Drive Pro Cold Weather 5-Pocket Pants give you everything you’d expect, and are also water-resistant and moisture wicking, with extra insulation.

Women's golf skorts and shorts

In hot weather, shorts and skorts let air circulate and keep you cool. Our UA Drive Skort gives you loads of flex, uses UA Storm tech to keep you dry, has a lightweight but tough outer layer and supportive inner shorts, plus pockets for balls and tees.

Women’s golf accessories

Golf accessories should help you play better. Take the UA Iso-Chill Driver Mesh Adjustable Cap. It’s super ventilated to keep you cool. The Iso-Chill sweatband disperses body heat and keeps sweat out your eyes. The back closure adjusts to fit your hair.

Take your golf to the next level

Getting better at golf takes hours of practice, hard work and focus. And the right golf clothing lets you play longer, with fewer distractions and greater comfort - helping you improve.
