FAQs about our Gym Tops
What material are gym tops made of?
Gym tops are made of sweat-wicking, fast drying and breathable materials like nylon, polyester and elastane (and often a combination). When you train hard, you sweat and get hot - these materials keep you dry and cool.
We added unique tech to these core gym top materials, to make your performancewear even better. UA Seamless gives you engineered mesh ventilation. We flattened out the fibres in UA Iso-Chill, so heat gets pulled away from your skin even faster. And UA ColdGear® gives you extra insulation without adding bulk.
Are cotton shirts good for the gym?
No, cotton is one of the worst fabrics for training in. Cotton absorbs water, so when you sweat, it holds the moisture. That leaves your clothes damp and sticky. But most importantly, it will start to chafe as you run, jump, lift and push - meaning you’re distracted, and not performing at your best. Bacteria also love moisture - training in cotton shirts means the gear will develop a bad odour.
Choose gym tops made from sweat-wicking, breathable fabrics like polyester or nylon.

Should I wear compression shirts to the gym?
Yes, wearing a compression shirt to the gym is a good choice for most kinds of training. Designed to fit close to your body, compression shirts help boost blood flow and oxygen delivery to your muscles - which equals better performance. They also provide muscle support, which can help you push your limits. And compression tops stay in place - so you don’t get distracted by loose gear in the middle of reps.
We build compression gear that helps you train even better. Tech like UA RUSH™ gives you infrared technology that reflects your body's energy to help you work harder and recover smarter, while UA HeatGear® keeps you cool and dry while grinding in the heat.
Which type of t-shirt is best for the gym?
The best gym t-shirts are built with technical fabrics that wick sweat, dry fast, and keep you cool. Choosing the best top for your workouts depends on exactly what training you’re doing, plus personal preferences.
For all-round training - cardio, resistance, and classes, t-shirts built with UA Tech™ are some of the best performancewear. This gear is loose, light, and ultra soft. If you lift, Project Rock t-shirts give you the heavy duty, durable gear you need to crush your goals. Need stretchy, supportive gym tops for intense sessions? Choose a compression t-shirt with materials that keep you cool, dry and focused.

What sports are most suitable for the UA HeatGear® shirt?
UA HeatGear® is a tough, lightweight, technical fabric we built for your warm weather training. It’s the ideal performancewear for any sport you do in hot conditions - be that outdoors in the sunshine or indoors in a sweaty summertime gym. Our UA HeatGear® shirts are the perfect choice for road and trail running, team sports like football and basketball, racket sports like tennis, padel and squash, and all kinds of strength or cardio training.
Which tops are better suited for indoor & outdoor workouts?
Under Armour performancewear is built to be versatile, and most of our tops are just as well suited to indoor sessions as they are to outdoor workouts. That said, some of our men’s tops are specifically intended for outdoor play (such as our golf polos, trail or road running tops), while others are more suited to training you’d typically do indoors (such as our heavyweight tees for lifting). Features like long sleeves might be your preferred choice for outdoor training in cooler weather, while sleeveless tops offer maximum ventilation when you’re grinding in a summertime gym. But the rules here aren’t hard and fast - it’s about what works best for you.
Which tops should you wear during hot or cold weather conditions?
Our tops are tough and versatile, and can easily adapt to most weather conditions. However, we’ve built specific technology into some of our gear that makes it better suited to warm or cold weather.
If you’re training in the heat, your body’s surface temperature increases and you sweat more. Your gear needs to be highly breathable to let that heat escape and efficiently wick sweat (transporting moisture from inside the fabric to the outside, where it can evaporate). UA HeatGear® is our most advanced training gear for the heat - this lightweight, fast drying fabric is insanely good at keeping you cool. Tops that use UA Iso-Chill have flatter fibres, which also disperses body heat and feels cool to the touch.
For cold weather sessions, you need more insulation to retain body heat - but your top should still wick sweat so you stay dry and don’t chafe. UA ColdGear® is our solution. It keeps you warm, while still being ventilated and fast drying.
What size gym tops should you wear?
Under Armour gym tops come in standard sizes (from XS up to 5XL) - simply choose your usual size, and it should fit like normal. If you’re unsure of your size, check our Size & Fit chart. It’ll help you measure up.
If you find your new gym top isn’t quite the right fit, we offer free returns, so you can simply buy a different size instead.
How should your gym top fit?
The way a gym top fits is a matter of personal preference. Some men prefer a closer fit. When the fabric is up against your skin, it makes it even easier to wick sweat away, and it can also provide compression and muscle support. Other guys prefer a looser fit, which allows for more ventilation and maximum range of motion. But most people prefer something in the middle - the majority of our men’s gym tops fit to your form but have some give too.
It’s worth trying on a few different tops at any of our stores to see what works best for you. You can also order a few different fits online, try them at home, and return those that aren’t for you.
Which tops are best for certain sports?
We build highly specialised men’s tops for the needs of different sports, including golf, road and trail running, training, football, hiking and basketball. Each of these tops is built with multiple advanced technologies that are targeted at helping you play that sport better. For example, our golf tops are built with 4-way stretch material that stays in place through your swing, while our UA Seamless tops are virtually sew-free, which eliminates chafing on long runs. You can narrow down your search using the ‘Sport’ filter feature on this page.
Is the ColdGear® shirt cut-resistant?
No, UA ColdGear® is not cut-resistant - it will not withstand cuts from things like scissors. However, it is tough and durable and can handle normal usage in sport - whether that’s brushing past bushes when you’re running trails or other players pulling at your shirt during football training.
