This is the gear your kid will be wearing for the next 10 months. It’s got to be tough, hard wearing and high quality. It has to help them play, travel and train in complete comfort. And it needs to be versatile for different situations and unpredictable weather.

We’ve compiled this back to school shopping list to give you a shortcut to the essential performancewear your kid needs this September.

Before hitting the stores or ordering online, it’s smart to build out a back to school list with the essentials. That means you won’t forget anything crucial - or buy gear they don’t really need.

We’ve broken down our back to school ideas into a few key school essentials.

General sports class performancewear

Whether your kid plays on a school team or needs something for a few hours of PE each week, they’ll need similar kinds of gear. However, if they play regularly in after school clubs, you might need to double up on some items.

Here are our most important school essentials.

Sports tops

Kids’ tops should be breathable and lightweight to prevent overheating. Choose gear made from fabrics like nylon or polyester and cotton blends, since these wick sweat and prevent chafing.

Depending on the school’s rules, PE tops might need to be in a standard colour (white, black and navy are most common). Some schools require PE tops to have collars, others are more relaxed. Some branding is usually allowed, but choose gear with smaller logos to be on the safe side.

Again, you’re looking for gear that’s breathable, sweat-wicking and lightweight. It should be stretchy too.

Some schools are more relaxed on uniform colours, others are stricter - check if you’re unsure. In any case, you can play it safe by opting for dark colours.

Trainers

Your kids’ general sports shoes need to be versatile, durable and ultra-comfortable. One week they’ll be learning to serve a tennis ball, next week they’ll be playing indoor basketball, followed by hockey or football on the astroturf. Some sports classes require specific footwear (such as football), but often an all-rounder is the way to go.

Tracksuits

A tracksuit should definitely be on your back to school checklist. They’re ideal for warming up in, plus they offer additional insulation for sports classes in cooler autumn weather.
